Gonorrhea or STD | What You Need to Know
Gonorrhea, commonly categorized under Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), is a bacterial infection that can affect both men and women. It is transmitted through unprotected sexual contact—vaginal, oral, or anal. The condition can be classified into two main types based on the type of bacteria involved: true gonorrhea and non-gonorrheal urethritis.
gonorrhea
True gonorrhea is caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Symptoms typically appear within 1 to 3 days after exposure. Common signs include unusual discharge from the genitals, swelling and redness, burning sensation during urination, sore throat, muscle aches, and in some cases, fever. If left untreated, the infection can spread to internal organs, leading to serious complications.
Chlamydia
Non-gonorrheal urethritis, on the other hand, is caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. This type of infection generally incubates for 1 to 3 weeks before symptoms show. In men, it often manifests as cloudy or whitish discharge from the urethra, pain in the testicles, and lower abdominal discomfort. Women may experience abnormal vaginal discharge, itching, burning urination, pelvic pain, or discomfort during intercourse. Untreated chlamydia can result in long-term reproductive health problems such as infertility or ectopic pregnancy.
If you experience any of the above symptoms, it's crucial to get tested and treated promptly—and it's equally important that your partner does so as well. Self-medicating with over-the-counter drugs is not recommended, as it can lead to incomplete treatment and antibiotic resistance, making the infection more difficult to cure in the future.
